The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays had a bench clearing brawl on Thursday night. It was the second brawl of the season this year for the Rays, who also brawled in spring training with the Yankees.
On Friday, the reasons for the brawl were revealed by several players, and ironically, the reason's were similar in both situations.
Carl Crawford, who was one of the players involved in the brawl, claims the whole battle began over sunflower seeds. He says that him and catcher Jason Varitek were having a debate over which seeds they ate. Varitek likes Planters, while Crawford prefers David.
The argument escalated two innings later when Crawford was hit by a pitch from a Red Sox pitcher. The next inning, James Shields retaliated by hitting Coco Crisp. Shields was heard yelling "That's for liking those p**ssy seeds that Planters make."
At that point, Crisp charged the mound and proceeded to get pummeled by Rays players. The same type incident happened in the Yankees brawl. Crawford claims, however, that the Yankee brawl was over bubble gum, not seeds.
Another development in the story happened on Friday. Major League Baseball suspended five Red Sox players, but no Rays players. When asked why, Commissioner Bud Selig said, "Come on, everyone knows David seeds are the best in town. We, as a league, suspended the Red Sox players not for the brawl, but for the poor preference in sunflower seeds.
