"I Beat You Rocky Raccoon!" Tiger Woods secured himself another major golf title on Monday afternoon, but the real story was who he thought he was playing. Woods said after the victory that he thought he was playing against Rocky Raccoon, a fictional character made up by the Beatles.
When told that he was actually playing against Rocco Mediate, he appeared stunned. "I was wondering the whole day why he did not even crack a smile when I was humming Beatles tunes," said Woods, who was physically shaken by the incident.
Reporters confronted Woods about the mishap shortly after he hit a par putt to win this year's U.S. Open and move him one step closer to Jack Nicklaus' record for major championships. The win would have been much sweeter, had he been playing the legend he thought
"I was up most of the night trying to figure out a game plan. I know that Rocky Raccoon checked into his room only to find Gideon's Bible. I just could not find a solution on how to attack a guy that had the help of the Lord," said an embarrassed Woods after his win.
Mediate found the humor in the situation, and had words of wisdom for the great Woods. "I told him after the playoff today that it could have been Rocky Road, Rocky IV, or Rocky Raccoon out there instead of me, and he still would have won the tournament," said Mediate, who looked relieved the whole ordeal of the playoff was over.
"I knew I had no chance to win, so really, the PGA should have just awarded Tiger the championship yesterday. This way, I could have gone home and gotten some sleep," said Mediate.
